Zanzibar - The Spice Islands
 

Set like jewel in tranquil coral waters, just 20 flight from Dar-es salaam or 45 minutes from ARUSHA is one of the world's most beautiful Island - Zanzibar or UNGUJA in SWAHILI. It's name evokes a romantic past. For centuries, Zanzibar has been a center of attraction for merchants, sea-farers, explorers, fortune hunters, missionaries and of course bandits. The cultural heritage of the people of Zanzibar is a reminder of the past left be Arabs, Assyrians, Hindus, Portuguese, Germans Samarians, Egyptians and British, who left their mark on the two Islands of Zanzibar (Unguja) and Pemba to the north. Swahili, the lingual franca is full of Arabic Hindu and Portuguese words. In fact, The bull-fight of Pemba and the occult "Mwaka Kogwa.(celebrations of Naizuz year) in Makunduchi originate Portugal and Persia respectively.

STONE TOWN (CITY TOUR) ZANZIBAR.

The Zanzibar stone town is about 150 years old with 96 hectares of residential area, gardens and bazaar streets. It portrays a vivid evidence of the rich cultural heritage from Arabs, Indians, Europeans combined with the local African traditions. The tour includes a visit to the central market (1904) , the Anglican Church built on the site of the former slave market. The House of wonders "Bel et AJAIB" built in 1883 buy sultan Seyyid Barghash and the Livingstone House. The tour also includes a walk along the marrow streets of the Stone Town which give you an opportunity to see some splendid artifacts like miniature samples of the famous ARAB doors and chests with their studded brass decorations.

SPICY TOUR.

Zanzibar is home to the famous spices such as Cardamon, cloves, black pepper, nutmeg and many others. Actually these spices had lured many explorers and traders to come here in the past centuries. The spice tour includes visits to some historic places such as the Persian baths at Kidichi built in 1850 by Sultan Seyyid Said for his Persian wife and Princess Shehzad, grand daughter of the famous Fateh Ali- then Shah of Persian. Also you will have chance to visit MANGA PWANI Slave Caves.

PRISON ISLAND TOUR

Prison Island also known as CHANGUU Island is an islet on the west of Zanzibar Town. It takes 30 minutes by motor boat. It measures about ½ mile long and 1/8 mile wide. Slave owners formerly used this as a prison for disobedient slaves. Gen. Matthews who constructed a jail in 1893 during the British Rule later bought the islet. Currently, the islet is now used as a tourist resort where a you can relax, sunbathe, swim snorkel, walk around and see the giant TORTOISES some as old as 100 years.

 

JOZANI FOREST

The Jozani Forest is 35-km southwest of Zanzibar Town. This is the only remaining natural forest in Zanzibar Island. A visit to the forest will give you a very rare opportunity to see different species of its flora and fauna. The forest is the refuge of the Red Colobus monkey.

PEMBA ISLE

Lying 40km to the North East of Zanzibar is PEMBA (the green Island) the island consists of main towns viz MKONI, CHAKE and WETE. Pemba has many historical monuments which include 3 ruined tombs (Ras Makimbu) a fort at Chake- Chake and the KUMBUU mosque ruins. The east of the island is the ruins of the late 15th century "MKAMA NDUME" fortress at PUJINI. The island has some of the best un-spoilt beaches and is also rich in undrewater coral gardens.

MISALI --- a small isle to the east of Pemba is unique for snorkeling and diving. The pemba channel is regarded as the best a sport for game fishing. To the north west is the Ngezi forest Reserve with and area of 14sq km, it's the only remaining natural forest in Pemba.

MAFIA ISLAND
The island lies south of Dar-es-salaam. It takes 45 minutes by a chartered plane from Arusha. Mafia island, is one of the most exciting big-game fishing and diving locations in the world. The blue water surrounding the island abound with a rich variety of fish of tremendous sizes and weight, catches include marlin, sailfish, sharks, tunny, kingfish, barracuda, rock-cod, dolphin, horse mackerel, wahoo, five fingered jack and fimbo. The main fishing season is from September to March, though fishing can be done all year round inside the reefs and channels.
